Discover the sensual and sweeping power of love in New York Times bestselling author Judith McNaught’s contemporary romances that will make “you laugh, cry, and fall in love again” (RT Book Reviews)—now available for the first time on ebook. When multinational tycoon Cole Harrison approaches her on a moonlit balcony at the White Orchid Charity Ball, Diana Foster has no idea how life-changing the night ahead will be. The most lavish social event of the Houston season had brought out Texas aristocracy in glittering array but Diana only agreed to attend to save face after reading about her fiancé leaving her for an Italian heiress in a sleazy gossip magazine. Her Beautiful Living magazine is her family’s success story, and Diana knows that as a single, childless, and suddenly unengaged woman, she is not living up to its lucrative image of upscale domestic tranquility. But when she spots the pride of Dallas billionaires, Cole Harrison, closing in on her with two crystal flutes and a bottle of champagne, she has no idea that he has ulterior motives for seducing her tonight. And he certainly has no idea that a match made in what he considers logic’s heaven might be headed straight for an unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime love. “Judith McNaught once again works her unique magic in this charming, sparkling romance” (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).

Hope, sacrifice, and restoration: throughout the American Civil War and its aftermath, the Foster family endured all of these in no small measure. Drawing from dozens of public and privately owned letters, A. Gibert Kennedy recounts the story of his great-great-grandfather and his family in A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters of Barham Bobo Foster and His Family, 1860-1863. Barham Bobo Foster was a gentleman planter from the Piedmont who signed the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Third South Carolina Volunteers alongside his two sons. Kennedy's primary sources are letters written by Foster and his sons, but he also references correspondence involving Foster's daughters and his wife, Mary Ann. The letters describe experiences on the battlefields of Virginia and South Carolina, vividly detailing camp life, movements, and battles along with stories of bravery, loss, and sacrifice. The Civil War cost Foster his health, all that he owned, and his two sons, though he was able to rebuild with the help of his wife and three daughters. Supplementing the correspondence with maps, illustrations, and genealogical information, Kennedy shows the full arc of the Foster family's struggle and endurance in the Civil War era.

You might think she'd be happy to see him again. Not exactly. She's a bit underdressed (as in skinny-dipping) and he's not supposed to exist. Lad knows the law of his people all too well: Don't get careless and Don't get caught. It's allowed his race to live undetected in this world for thousands of years, mentioned only in flawed and fading folklore. Lad's never been able to forget about Ryann since that night ten years ago. When he sees her again, his fascination re-ignites and becomes a growing desire that tempts him to break all the rules. He isn’t supposed to even talk to a human, much less fall in love with one. And the timing is atrocious. The Assemblage is coming, the rift between the Light and Dark is widening. Attn Twilight movie fans! It's time there was a good parody! The Twilight Saga has been the subject of a few previous parodies -but I hope you will find this version unique. Most are filled with bad words and sexual content, but since I am a servant of God, I wanted to make a parody that was super funny AND clean - one that was great, but wasn't in the gutter! This is 99% based off lines & scenes from the movies, so if you're wondering about needing to have read the books - you don't! Tedwin and his fridgitarian family members, including 4 adopted siblings (Alith, Jackson, Dimmit & Rose) reside in Ports, Oregon - a small town where they can live under the witness protection program with minimal interference, playing baseball & running their Italian ice cream franchise, Cold Skin Creamery. Growing up in the mafia was hard for Tedwin, and he's glad that his dad (Carlo) and his mom (Escusme), fled that life and came to America so Carlo could pursue his medical degree. Their genetically inherited, olfactory gifts proved invaluable to a secret, powerful society that used them to literally "sniff out" the best human blood on the illegal red market. The entire family lives a "frigitarian" lifestyle: meaning they only eat stuff that is refrigerated or frozen - they never eat food that has been heated or comes out of the oven, making them different than other Italian families. Everything is going fine until a girl named Portabella (Ella) moves into town, a girl who loves to eat jalapeno pizza - so much so, in fact - that it runs through her veins. Tedwin doesn't know if he can have a friendship - or any kind of relationship - with this girl who smells like forbidden food. Tedwin is embarrassed about his past - he doesn't want to be... a MOBSTER. He also can't read her mind, which is very frustrating and new. His sister, Alith, assures him that she and Ella will be great friends. and that he and Ella will be together in the future. Jason, Ella’s childhood best friend (bestest, brightest and BUFFEST ), also cares about Ella - much to Tedwin's chagrin. He turns into an animal, too - but not the one you think. He tries to convince Ella that eating so much junk food is bad for her blood sugar levels, reminding her that she might need her toes someday, but she is convinced that she can scarf down anything she wants: pizza, ice cream, Doritos, etc. - and her figure stays the same. However, something she eats in 'Baking Dough - Part 2' will change that and the lives of everyone she cares about. What makes Tedwin’s throat burn like a white-hot branding iron? What was the terrible fate of Mr. Fluffkins the chinchilla? Who has a misunderstanding about Tedwin's stuffed animal collection? What does Jason beg Ella not to do? What was Ella born to be? Who had a human snack out in the woods? The answer to these burning questions and more is what you will have to read to find out!

How Nations Remember draws on multiple disciplines in the humanities and social sciences to examine how a nation's account of the past shapes its actions in the present. National memory can underwrite noble aspirations, but the volume focuses largely on how it contributes to the negative tendencies of nationalism that give rise to confrontation. Narratives are taken as units of analysis for examining the psychological and cultural dimensions of remembering particular events and also for understanding the schematic codes and mental habits that underlie national memory more generally. In this account, narratives are approached as tools that shape the views of members of national communities to such an extent that they serve as co-authors of what people say and think. Drawing on illustrations from Russia, China, Georgia, the United States, and elsewhere, the book examines how "narrative templates," "narrative dialogism," and "privileged event narratives" shape nations' views of themselves and their relations with others. The volume concludes with a list of ways to manage the disputes that pit one national community against another.

This book is a record of one man's life across almost a century from the end of World War I until the end of the 20th Century. But it is also the story of a good marriage resulting in a fine family. The story runs from an Iowa of the agricultural age and culture on which America's Middle West was established to the global economy of today's major conglomerate businesses with its jet planes and satellite communications with a brief time out for the shock of World War II. Many of my generation will identify with the experiences and changes of which this history is made.

Sagas of Icelanders, also called family sagas, are the best known of the many literary genres that flourished in medieval Iceland, most of them achieving written form during the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Modern readers and critics often praise their apparently realistic descriptions of the lives, loves and feuds of settler families of the first century and a half of Iceland's commonwealth period (c. AD 970-1030), but this ascription of realism fails to account for one of the most important components of these sagas, the abundance of skaldic poetry, mostly in dróttkvætt "court metre", which comes to saga heroes' lips at moments of crisis. These presumed voices from the past and their integration into the narrative present of the written sagas are the subject of this book. It investigates what motivated Icelandic writers to develop this particular mode, and what particular literary effects they achieved by it. It also looks at the various paths saga writers took within the evolving prosimetrum (a mixed verse and prose form), and explores their likely reasons for using poetry in diverse ways. Consideration is also given to the evolution of the genre in the context of the growing popularity in Iceland of romantic and legendary sagas. A final chapter is devoted to understanding why a minority of sagas of Icelanders do not use poetry at all in their narratives.g prosimetrum (a mixed verse and prose form), and explores their likely reasons for using poetry in diverse ways. Harold Weston's Freedom in the Wilds brings an informal history of the rugged Adirondack wilderness together with Weston’s own adventures there as an artist. The vivid and spirited stories he gathered from guides, lumbermen, and visionaries continue to make the case for preserving the wild lands of the region. First published in 1971, the book became a classic of Adirondack literature notable for its exploration of the dynamic relationship between wilderness and creativity and its ever more relevant appeal to protect an area within ourselves forever wild. In this third edition, Rebecca Foster brings Weston’s fascinating personal story to the foreground. A new section of the book with excerpts from Weston’s rich storehouse of letters and diaries will be a revelation to fans of Weston’s work or for anyone interested in the growth of an impassioned, artistic mind. Here too are new illustrations, explanatory notes, and an introduction tracing the irrepressible energy behind Weston’s accomplishments, including the writings in this book.
