How are you supposed to respond when you receive a call that your child has been in a severe accident? This is our family’s journey of how God used tragedy to drive us to our knees and seek to trust Him at His very word, even when the outcome could be devastating. It tells of the power of many people praying and just how God answered those prayers. Isaiah’s life was forever changed that day in many ways. Some may say it was a tragedy, and yet he views it as a second chance at life and living that life to the fullest each day. His new fervor to serve Jesus is fresh and contagious. Our hope is that our story will encourage you as you wade through your own trials and inspire you to read God’s Word and take it to heart in your daily living. It’s powerful!

In 1990, with no experience in the nonprofit sector, psychiatric nurse Linda Mornell started Summer Search, a program commited to creating one of the few opportunities in the country where adolescents from all economic backgrounds are given the chance to work and live together for an extended period of weeks or months in summer experiential education programs. Most programs like this are expensive and not available to low-income youth. Seeing an opportunity to change that, Mornell began Summer Search in San Francisco with 14 students and a budget of $30,000. Her passion and desire to change the path for these 14 students has blossomed into an even larger impact today—to give the life-changing experience to more than 2,200 students in the Bay Area, Boston, New York City, Seattle, and Philadelphia annually. Forever Changed documents the importance of adolescents from all economic groups being able to attend the same summer programs that adolescents from more privileged backgrounds have found so beneficial. It includes compelling stories of Summer Search students who each faced specific challenges, such as learning disabilities and behavioral problems. In the book, Mornell persuasively argues how summer experiential education programs can aid in the growing need for adolescents to find their own voice and embark on a path of success.

Download A Heart Forever Changed Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Between the 1940’s and the 1960’s, rheumatic fever was a leading cause of death in children. If they survived, there would most likely be some lasting damage, particularly to the heart. This is Etta LaVinya’s story of being one of those children who, at age 5, was diagnosed with scarlet fever. Scarlet fever is contracted first by a germ called group A streptococcus, or strep throat. If scarlet fever isn’t completely cured, then rheumatic fever develops. In the 1990’s, Etta found out, while getting a checkup, that she had a mitral valve prolapse (a heart valve that doesn’t close properly) most likely caused by rheumatic fever. In 1965, Etta’s parents weren’t aware that she wasn’t cured from the scarlet fever and had developed rheumatic fever. Her doctor informed her that the mitral valve prolapse wasn’t anything to worry about, but she would need to take antibiotics before any dental procedures, or any other invasive procedures she underwent in the future to prevent her from contracting bacterial endocarditis. She followed those instructions for years, and had no problems until 2007. In the year 2000, Etta was married for the first time. The marriage was a rocky and confusing union for her, and after 5 years she realized she was married to an abusive man. During those years of verbal, mental and emotional abuse the stress it caused is what Etta believes landed her in the hospital in 2007 fighting for her life. This is Etta LaVinya’s story of surviving a very serious illness, two open heart surgeries and more, brought on by extreme stress. She has written her story with the hope that it will bring strength and courage to those who may be experiencing serious illness, open heart surgery or domestic violence.

'Forever Changes' may be thirty-six years old at the time of this writing, but its hermetic fusion of the personal and the political feels more relevant than ever. It speaks to the present in ways that, say, a Jefferson Airplane record never could, whatever the parallels between the late U60s and our contemporary morass.

The authors--a mental health therapist and a veteran principal--provide proven, reliable strategies to help you * Understand what trauma is and how it hinders the learning, motivation, and success of all students in the classroom. * Build strong relationships and create a safe space to enable students to learn at high levels. * Adopt a strengths-based approach that leads you to recalibrate how you view destructive student behaviors and to perceive what students need to break negative cycles. * Head off frustration and burnout with essential self-care techniques that will help you and your students flourish. Each chapter also includes questions and exercises to encourage reflection and extension of the ideas in this book. As an educator, you face the impact of trauma in the classroom every day. Download To Be Nsala's Daughter Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
In To Be Nsala’s Daughter, Chérie N. Rivers shows how colonial systems of normalized violence condition the way we see and, through collaboration with contemporary Congolese artists, imagines ways we might learn to see differently. Rivers focuses on a photograph of a Congolese man, Nsala, looking at the disembodied hand and foot of his daughter, which were removed as punishment for his failure to deliver the requisite amount of rubber in King Léopold’s Congo. This photograph, taken by British missionary Alice Seeley Harris, featured prominently in abolitionist campaigns to end colonial atrocities in Central Africa in the early twentieth century. But in addition to exposing the visible violence of colonialism, Rivers argues, this photograph also exposes the invisible—and continued—violence of the colonial gaze. With a poetic, personal collage of stories and images, To Be Nsala’s Daughter traces the past and present of the colonial gaze both in Congo and in the author’s lived experience as a mixed-race Black woman in the United States.

“Compassionate, poignant, and practical. . . . Transcending Loss will be a great blessing on your lifetime journey of recovery.”—Harold Bloomfield, MD, psychiatrist and author of How to Survive the Loss of Love and How to Heal Depression Death doesn’t end a relationship, it simply forges a new type of relationship—one based not on physical presence but on memory, spirit, and love. There are many wonderful books available that address acute grief and how to cope with it. But they often focus on crisis management and imply that there is an "end" to mourning, and fail to acknowledge grief’s ongoing impact and how it changes through the years. “This is a book about death and grief, yes, but more important, it is a book about love and hope. I have learned from my experience and interviews with courageous people about pain, struggle, resiliency, and meaning. Their stories show over time, you can learn to transcend even in spite of the pain.”—from the introduction by Ashley Davis Bush, LCSW
