These ten classic stories are masterful depictions of the underside of life, deep in the American South. On receiving an early copy, Evelyn Waugh remarked 'If these stories are in fact the work of a young lady, they are indeed remarkable.'She's horrifyingly funny . . . It's that cool, removed style combined with very black stories.' Donna Tartt'No one has written better about the reality of evil. Few have written as well, with such sharp-edged compassion, about the weaknesses and follies of humanity, about the operation of grace in our lives and about the necessity of humility. Her stories - her intelligence and passion - can restore reason to minds unhinged by our fame-obsessed, technology-obsessed culture.' Dean Koontz, New York Times

A preacher’s son from a small town down South that people have never heard of has a very conflicted soul. He must choose to love those that don’t love him. He must still grow up with the perception that he is not allowed to make the same mistakes every mortal man makes. He has questions that he should already have the answers to. But the truth is he doesn’t have them. Consciousness Before Conscience is about being aware of the world around you so you can make the right decisions on how to tackle life’s challenges that lies ahead of you. It is a collection of reflections. Just when that love that balanced you leaves you, things begin to shift. You become unbalanced and even fall at times. Questions start to be asked within. Why was I allowed to mess this up? Why was they allowed to mess this up? Why should I love those who don’t love me? Love them even when they view me as inferior and I know God made us of the same dust of the earth and we have the same blood flowing? Does God see me? What is my purpose? Why have I become this new man? Balance has been interrupted. But the only way to get it back is to write out all of my day’s dreams and night’s fantasies. It’s a journey out of hurt into happiness once you realize the only way out is through love. This is my journey, our journey. Journey to happiness has always been about the love we were created from and born with. We just have to get back to it.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Vienna, language: English, abstract: The following paper gives an in-depth analysis of Flannery O'Connor's acclaimed short story A Good Man Is Hard To Find. A detailed account of O'Connor's life and her status as a fervent Roman Catholic in the predominantly Protestant South during the period of World War II and the Cold War sheds light on her literary motivations and her brilliant use of the grotesque. The historical and religious context complements the second part of the paper, which consists of a thorough textual analysis of A Good Man Is Hard To Find. Special emphasis is put on the exploration of character relationships, important themes and cultural signifiers, which again links up with the first part of the paper.

This book connects the aging woman to the image of God in the work of Flannery O’Connor, Joyce Carol Oates, Alicia Ostriker, Lucille Clifton, Mary Szybist, and Anne Babson. It introduces a canon of contemporary American women’s spiritual literature with the goal of showing how this literature treats aging and spirituality as major, connected themes. It demonstrates that such literature interacts meaningfully with feminist theology, social science research on aging and body image, attachment theory, and narrative identity theory. The book provides an interdisciplinary context for the relationship between aging and spirituality in order to confirm that US women’s writing provides unique illustrations of the interconnections between aging and spirituality signaled by other fields. This book demonstrates that relationships between the human and divine remain a consistent and valuable feature of contemporary women’s literature and that the divine–human relationship is under constant literary revision.

Besonders inA good man is hard to find und The life you save may be your own offenbart sich die Ungerechtigkeit der Welt, die Grausamkeit der Menschheit und die Borniertheit und Intoleranz konservativer Südstaatler. [...]

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, language: English, abstract: At first sight “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O`Connor just appears like a grotesque story because it begins with a happy family trip and ends with a conversation about Jesus and six murders. But if the story is read under the aspect of religion, it has indeed got a deeper meaning. The fact that the author herself was a very religious woman, as will be obvious from her biography, and that religion appears in all of her works, shows that this short story can only be interpreted with the focus on religion.
